We all know that traveling has a lot of benefits. There is its contribution to emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental health. It provides us with greater life meaning due to the discoveries and experiences we make along the way. The explorations we take become our fortress. It allows us to gain knowledge, self-awareness, and an overall epiphany. Though there are hassles and unfortunate instances in the process, we still understand that its purpose is to keep us appreciate living. Even a therapist would agree that traveling is one of the essential things we need to do once or twice in our lives.
Before we get to the elaboration of why all of us should travel, there is a unique distinction to make. That is between traveling and being a tourist. Tourism is merely a commercial product where it feels like people receive a movie pass. Meaning, they get to see and experience different things without even going out of their comfort zones. But in traveling, it is more like exploring. There is self-emergence in the chosen destination where it allows an individual to come in a point of becoming part of it. Big cities have a lot of tourists that enjoy scenic views and all that. But travelers, they explore natural resources and focus on less traveled paths. Though this may seem a bit too much, everything will still depend on the reason for the trip.
It’s New And Outside Of The Comfort Zone
It is true when Steve Orma, PsyD said, “Fear makes us feel alive and know we are stepping outside our comfort zones, which is exciting.” However, traveling focuses on leaving what’s in order and moving towards the unknown. There are uncertainties along the way, and things are way too different than what most of us think is usual. Its success lies in the question of “how far into the unknown can someone go.” Well, that’s up to everybody to decide. The idea of going into places where nobody knows us and where we don’t speak the language is a bit scary. But despite those consequences, it allows us to adapt and become in control of ourselves even for once.
What is more indulging is its capability to help us escape a routine. That explains why we appreciate traveling more because it breaks behavioral patterns we consciously rely on. Whenever there is a feeling that days are becoming the same, traveling becomes a brute-force strategy. It gives this sense of always looking forward to something new. It adds excellent dimensions into our lives, which makes the uncomfortable zone hustles bearable.
It’s An Advanced Form Of Education
One of the things that add value to our education is traveling. That is because exploring is comparable to a condensed education where things are unknown not unless discovered. It supports so many skills and interconnected knowledge. It allows us to understand the use of our natural resources such as minerals, forests, fertile lands, water, etc. Traveling can make us appreciate things that exist in the world without any input of humans. It ends up in giving us an overall upgrade at every end of the trip where we increase value and awareness to what is currently in front of us. There is a buildup of detailed insights of science and technology, geography, history, and international events. Traveling promotes experimental knowledge that makes information stick around a lot longer. Because according to Alicia H. Clark, Psy.D. “The best progress happens when you apply what you’ve learned outside that setting, in your real life.”
It Makes Us Meet People With Different Stories
Despite the stable connection we feel with friends, family, and co-workers, we can’t deny the feeling of emptiness from time to time. There is this sense of longing and wanting of having new people around. There is this eagerness inside that wants us to gain more friends and expand our network. Thus, traveling becomes a perfect opportunity for this. Meeting people from different places around the world creates a fantastic feeling. Their life stories and experiences can make us feel interested and excited. Their culture and norms give us an opening to learn more about what is out of our reach. Talking to different people and knowing things about their lives helps us become more sensitive towards others and ourselves as well. There is a chance of understanding context in a nonsuperficial relationship. It allows us to grow and develop a personality that is useful today and tomorrow. Note that “We only have control of ourselves and our own desire for growth and change. Part of that growth and change is deciding the type of person we allow in our lives, and the positive impact they can have on us.” A remidner from Nikki Martinez, Psy.D. LCPC
Perhaps there are things we are afraid of even if we don’t know or understand what it is. But that’s okay. If we can reach out to the world and embrace those things we don’t understand, we can surely sustain a beautiful life. Traveling is everybody’s sweet escape because it exposes everyone into different ideas. That is the reason why a single trip changes an entire worldview.
